TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE IN THE HOME

Accidental poisoning of pets is, unfortunately, more common than you might think. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center receives over 150,000 calls per year, and PetPlan Insurance pays out as much as $10,000 in poison-related claims. It's important we keep our pets safe from toxins and household products that may harm them. After all, our pets are family and therefore our responsibility.

Your furry friends walk bare pawed on the same floor you were scrubbing all gloved and masked up just five minutes before. They breathe in the lemon scented “freshness” of the recently cleaned home, but should they? Pets, by their size and nature, have more exposure to household toxins but much less tolerance than us. Direct contact with these products can be life threatening. Why take any chances? We would baby proof our homes so let’s not forget to make it safe for our furry ones too! With these simple tips, you can avoid any heartache and costly trips to the vet.

 1. Pet-proofing your home

When we think of household toxins that are dangerous for pets we might only consider bleach or the multi-purpose cleaner we use generously around our homes. But, remember, human medications and makeup can also be poisonous.

Before you start getting rid of such items, why not simply lock them away and make sure their nozzles are properly closed to avoid any leakage? If your pets are particularly curious and talented at opening doors and drawers, it might mean getting some actual baby-proofing gadgets.

2. Conscious waste disposal

Garbage cans are a particular favorite of our furry friends with their hidden treasures and sweet smells. Selective disposal is one way to make sure that the delicious leftover food or the very attractive piece of chewable anything is not mixed in with batteries, medications, poisonous liquids and their containers.mixed in with batteries, medications, poisonous liquids, and their containers.

 3. Alternative cleaning products

Proper ventilation of the entire home is crucial after using any cleaning products, but better still, why not switch to more natural ways of getting rid of dirt? Staple household items such as baking soda, white vinegar, olive oil and salt can go a long way at cleaning safely and effectively.

4. Look out for warning signs

Accidents can happen. You must look out for the warning signs and act quickly. To put it simply, if they don’t seem their usual happy selves, then something is probably wrong. It is easy, we just have to be conscious! Toxins are harmful to humans and animals alike. With minimum effort we can safeguard the long term health and happiness of the entire household!

And make sure to keep up to date with all their vaccinations as these are also crucial in the battle against other dangers of this world!
